CAE
Abbreviation for "Computer Aided Engineering" for the computation of stability/solidity or fluid dynamic simulation e.g. of 3D models with computer programs.
CAM
Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) refers to the direct controlling of production plant as well as the supporting transport and storage systems. CAM is a basic component of the computer integrated production (Computer Integrated Manufacturing, CIM).
CATIA
"Computer Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application". Leading CAD system of the automobil and aviation industry.
Collaboration Gateway
Term for a system for data forwarding and data reception.
Data formats
Most programs focus on a seperate data format. This complicates data exchange between the different CAD programs, the reason why approaches to standardizations are aspired. 3D_Evolution works with native interfaces, independently from quality of interfaces. We differentiate between CAD system-neutral and CAD system-specific data formats.
With CAD system-neutral formats only the transfer of edges, surfaces and volume models is usually possible. The construction history is usually lost, making the transferred data only partly useable. CAD system-specific data formats allow for a complete transfer of the CAD models, but are only available for a few systems.
Defeaturing
Elimination of "features" such as fillets, chamfers and scripting on 3D models for the optimization for networking and FEM computation.
Facet
A face described solely by a set of points that belong to one plane and that are joined together by the segments of a straight line.
Feature based modeling
A component is designed with the aid of features (=pre-defined shape elements, with technical definition) and not solely made up of geometric primitives like lines, faces, base bodies. With 3D Evolution Featurebased, the whole history including construction elements can be transferred.
Geometry
The geometric part of a model consists of points, curves and surfaces.
